PIAGET has just unveiled the first preview timepiece for the 2024 Watches & Wonders Geneva exhibition – the “Polo 79” watch. It faithfully returns to the design of the first-generation Polo watch and is equipped with the new in-house 1200P1 ultra-thin self-winding movement, specially commemorating PIAGET’s 150th anniversary.
The Polo watch, born in 1979, was the first sports watch in PIAGET’s history. Its name derives from the popular European sport of polo, and its design perfectly captures the unique style of the 1970s, aligning with the era’s trend of “luxury sports watches” in watchmaking. It quickly gained favor among social elites, becoming a symbol of luxury and status.
The new 2024 Polo 79 watch faithfully recreates the classic design of the original Polo. The entire watch is crafted entirely from 18K yellow gold, with the size increased from 34mm to a more modern 38mm. The structure of the gold case is particularly complex – the main body is cut from a single block of gold and finished with a satin-brushed polish, then set with mirror-polished gold pillars. This design requires more production time and significantly enhances the three-dimensional and visual effect of the gold.
The solid gold dial features three-dimensional horizontal gadroons that flow seamlessly with the case. The time markers are circular gold dots: larger dots indicate the hours, and smaller dots mark the minutes. The two gold hands are satin-brushed, showcasing a luxurious and pure design aesthetic.
