Zenith’s Captain Winsor Annual Calendar Boutique Edition has been a very popular entry-level model since its launch in 2011, combining elegance with practical functionality, offering an innovative and complex design (chronograph + annual calendar) that satisfies the needs of a first-time watch buyer.
This special boutique edition released at Basel this year features a more classical white dial with a paper-like matte texture. The dial markers are changed to a vintage railway track style, and the hour markers have been replaced with more readable Arabic numerals. While the changes are thoughtfully executed, the original version still has a more commanding, “captain-like” presence.
The movement is still the Zenith El Primero 4054 automatic movement, which was designed by Ludwig Oechslin, the curator of the International Watchmaking Museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Oechslin is known for designing “smart” chronograph mechanisms that present complex functions in a simpler, more efficient way.
In this movement, Ludwig Oechslin uses three concentric circles to display the day, month, and date. It only needs to be adjusted once a year: for months with 31 days, the date disc will push the month disc forward, and for months with only 30 days, the date disc will skip the 31st. Only February requires manual adjustment for March. Compared to most annual calendars, which require 30 to 40 components, this movement uses just 9 functional components to achieve the same complex task.
The watch comes with a standard alligator leather strap and folding clasp. In addition to the 18K rose gold version, there is also a stainless steel version available.
