Louis Vuitton Tambour Moon Flying Tourbillon Review
At the 2021 Watches & Wonders exhibition, Louis Vuitton unveiled the Tambour Moon Flying Tourbillon, a groundbreaking skeletonized tourbillon watch featuring a full sapphire crystal case. This watch celebrates the elegance of mechanical architecture and is the first sapphire-cased tourbillon to earn the prestigious Poinçon de Genève certification, marking a historic milestone for the maison.
The 42.5 mm sapphire case is 9.9 mm thick, offering balanced wrist presence. It is available in three color variations: clear sapphire with black crown, pink sapphire with rose gold crown, and blue sapphire with silver-tone crown. To ensure uniformity and structural integrity, all sapphire components are cut from a single crystal cylinder. Artisans extract the middle case, case back, and LV monogram bridge from a 150 mm-long, 50 mm-diameter sapphire cylinder, highlighting exceptional craftsmanship.
The highly skeletonized dial showcases the mechanical movement: at 12 o’clock, the mainspring barrel cover is openworked; at 3 o’clock, the crown gear train is visible; at 6 o’clock, a flying tourbillon is shaped in homage to the Monogram flower motif; at 9 o’clock, a sapphire bridge cut into the LV logo anchors the composition, with the Geneva Seal visible nearby.
Powering the watch is the in-house LV 90 manual-winding movement, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour with an 80-hour power reserve. The watch is completed with a black alligator leather strap and titanium buckle, and is water-resistant to 30 meters. Its combination of sapphire architecture, certified craftsmanship, and refined finishing positions it as one of Louis Vuitton’s most exquisite haute horlogerie creations.
