Greubel Forsey has long been known for its geeky and engineering-driven approach to watchmaking, but their diamond-set 24-Second Tourbillon introduced at this year’s SIHH caught many by surprise. Who would have expected a brand so focused on mechanical sophistication to make such a luxurious and gorgeous diamond-studded masterpiece? The slanted tourbillon, known for its technical prowess, and the diamonds on the watch complement each other beautifully, creating a stunning contrast between mechanical intricacy and elegance.
Interestingly, Greubel Forsey’s technical director, when introducing the piece, proudly mentioned their choice of IF/D-E grade diamonds, a rare selection for diamond-set watches, indicating exceptional quality. The watch is adorned with 272 elongated-cut diamonds, with a total weight of 9.71 carats.
The case, measuring 43.5mm, is crafted from platinum, and the dial layout mirrors the 2012 non-diamond version. It features royal blue as the primary color (which reportedly took a considerable amount of time to perfect). At 4 o’clock, there’s a 72-hour power reserve indicator, and at 9 o’clock, a small seconds subdial. The 7 o’clock position houses the Greubel Forsey patent 24-second tourbillon.
While most tourbillons complete one full rotation every 60 seconds, Greubel Forsey has never been one for convention. Instead, they’ve designed a 24-second tourbillon, which completes a full rotation every 24 seconds. The sapphire crystal frame of the tourbillon gives the appearance that it is floating in mid-air as it moves, creating a mesmerizing effect.
While the non-diamond version from 2012 was priced at around $500,000, this full-diamond edition is expected to be priced no lower than $750,000.
