To commemorate the 50th anniversary of its first chronograph launched in 1970, Tudor introduced a new generation of the Black Bay Chrono, featuring an optimized case structure for improved proportions and comfort — and, most notably, a highly coveted “Panda” dial configuration.
The new model retains its 41 mm stainless steel case, but the thickness has been reduced from 14.9 mm to 14.4 mm, enhancing overall wearability. According to Tudor’s technical documentation, the sapphire crystal has been re-engineered with a deeper recess into the case, and the movement has been repositioned to achieve a more balanced visual layout. The black anodized aluminum bezel incorporates a tachymeter scale, while the large screw-down crown and chronograph pushers ensure ease of operation and reinforce the sporty aesthetic.
Two dial options are available — a white dial with black subdials (“Panda”) and a black dial with white subdials (“Reverse Panda”). Both are striking and timeless, though the Panda version remains a crowd favorite. The signature “Snowflake” hands — a Tudor hallmark since 1969 — ensure optimal legibility. A central chronograph seconds hand is complemented by a 45-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock, each with finely recessed edges for added depth. The hands and hour markers are coated with Super-LumiNova for excellent visibility in the dark, and the red-tipped chronograph seconds hand adds a subtle touch of contrast.
Powering the watch is the Calibre MT5813 automatic movement, developed from the Breitling B01 base and equipped with a column wheel, vertical clutch, and a silicon balance spring for enhanced precision and reliability. The movement is COSC-certified, beats at 28,800 vph, and provides a 70-hour power reserve. Water resistance is rated to 200 meters.
The Black Bay Chrono is available with either a stainless steel bracelet or a black fabric strap, and is priced at≈ 4410 € — without question, one of the best value chronographs of 2021.
