The Bird on a Rock design was first created by Tiffany designer Jean Schlumberger in 1965 and has since become one of the brand’s most recognizable icons. Over the decades, Tiffany has introduced multiple gemstone variations, including green tourmaline, aquamarine, and the famous version featuring the Tiffany Yellow Diamond.
The 2024 Rainbow Bird on a Rock collection comprises twelve one-of-a-kind brooches, each centered around a remarkable colored gemstone — for example, a 46-carat spessartine garnet, a 47-carat black opal, a 66-carat champagne zircon, a 56-carat blue tourmaline, a 100-carat aquamarine, a 68-carat rubellite, a 65-carat tanzanite, an 80-carat blue zircon, and a 25-carat diamond. The dazzling array of hues vividly embodies the collection’s “rainbow” theme.
The gemstone birds preserve Schlumberger’s original sculptural silhouette — a bird gracefully leaning forward with an elegantly elongated tail. Feathers are meticulously set with colorful gems such as turquoise, multicolored sapphires, amethysts, and rubies, accented with luminous pearls and brilliant diamonds, creating a mesmerizing symphony of color and light.
In homage to Jean Schlumberger’s love for enameling, several pieces incorporate the traditional paillonné enamel technique, in which thin sheets of precious metal are embedded within layers of translucent enamel. This multi-firing process produces rich, crystalline hues that beautifully complement the radiance of the gemstones.
