This year, at Basel pre-show, independent watchmaker De Bethune returned to its original theme of “digital” displays. The Dream Watch 5 evokes the same feeling as when we first saw the DBS Digital in 2009. Five years later, the watchmakers express their inner totem in a bolder and more direct way, creating a truly captivating timepiece.
The design is inspired by classic Disney sci-fi spaceships, a nostalgic reference from childhood. The titanium case measures 49mm in width and only 11mm in thickness, comparable to a standard JLC Reverso, making it surprisingly comfortable on the wrist. At 3 o’clock, the crown is set with a 1-carat ruby, serving as a striking accent on the side.
The dial is extremely minimalist, consisting of an hour disc and a minute disc. The hour disc uses a jumping-hour mechanism, advancing one number at each full hour. At the center, a circular display shows the moonphase.
It is powered by De Bethune’s in-house DB2144 movement, featuring a silicon escapement and balance wheel, and a dual barrel system providing an impressive 5-day power reserve, perfectly matching expectations.
For many men, the idea of a spaceship is a long-held dream. This watch captures that almost-forgotten childhood memory, which makes it so emotionally appealing.
