Every time we talk about BVLGARI’s OCTO series, we have to revisit the history of Gerald Genta—the brand renowned for creating complex functional watches, which was acquired by BVLGARI in 1999. Since 2010, all watch series have been branded under BVLGARI, and OCTO represents Gerald Genta’s “legacy.”
The name “OCTO” refers to “eight-sided,” representing the most distinctive feature of this series: its octagonal case design. However, during Gerald Genta’s era, the OCTO series was positioned as a collection of high-complication watches, with a series of astonishing mechanical designs (we’ll revisit this history later).
BVLGARI’s OCTO, while no longer featuring these dazzling complications, still carries the high-end BVL 193 movement produced by Vaucher, emphasizing the brand’s commitment and focus on horology.
For us, the biggest breakthrough in the new OCTO model is its color design, featuring a white lacquer dial, rose gold markers, and a stainless steel case. This combination presents a timeless yet youthful aesthetic, further enhancing the brand’s distinctiveness. The octagonal case of the OCTO has 110 facets, each edge meticulously polished and finished to create a gem-like three-dimensional effect.
The BVL 193 movement, supplied by Vaucher, has dual barrels and a 50-hour power reserve. Vaucher is co-owned by Parmigiani Fleurier and Hermes and specializes in providing high-end movements. Both Parmigiani and Hermes use Vaucher movements in their own timepieces.
As the final OCTO of 2013, we can see that BVLGARI has found a way to integrate Gerald Genta’s bold style with its own brand, retaining the essence of the OCTO design while meeting our expectations for BVLGARI. It’s truly a fantastic beginning.
