This fairy-shaped brooch comes from Van Cleef & Arpels’ Midsummer Night’s Dream
high jewelry collection. Inspired by Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the designer captures the enchanting image of a fairy dancing in a magical forest, all crafted with pure diamonds.
Since the creation of the first Ballerina brooch, elegant, figurative jewelry has become one of the most iconic elements in Van Cleef & Arpels’ designs. In 1944, Van Cleef & Arpels introduced the Spirit of Beauty Fairy brooch, which featured a fairy with outstretched wings for the first time.
The play includes a scene where the fairy king, queen, elves, and fairies dance together, and this moment inspired the creation of the fairy brooch, designed as a fairy dancing by a flowerbed. The designer uses platinum to outline the fairy’s long limbs, emphasizing
the graceful curves of her dance movements.
To capture the three-dimensional form of the fairy, the designer set diamonds in three distinct cutting styles:
-
The fairy’s face is formed by a rose-cut diamond, giving depth to her facial features.
-
The flower and skirt are made with brilliant-cut diamonds, emphasizing the shimmering movement of the fairy as she dances.
-
The wings are crafted using step-cut diamonds, elongating the wings and enhancing their delicate appearance.
