OMEGA introduces this impressive new generation of the “Speedmaster Dark Side Of The Moon Apollo 8” watch in 2024. Not only does it feature a laser-ablated lunar surface with enhanced three-dimensional details, but the small seconds sub-dial also cleverly incorporates a miniature Saturn V rocket, paying tribute to the historic Apollo 8 mission—the first human spaceflight to orbit the Moon.
The new Dark Side of the Moon model features a 44.25mm black ceramic case, with a reduced thickness from 13.8mm to 13mm. The total weight is just 99 grams, offering a more comfortable wearing experience. The tachymeter scale on the ceramic bezel is filled with white grand feu enamel, presenting a delicate play of light and shadow and a particularly sharp appearance on the wrist.
The openworked dial offers a full view of the movement’s front-side bridges. Features of the Moon’s near side, like craters, are rendered in relief through laser ablation. Turning the watch over reveals the “far side of the Moon” as witnessed by the Apollo 8 astronauts. This new engraving is more intricate and three-dimensional, with expertly graded shades of grey capturing the undulating lunar terrain.
The “OMEGA” and “Speedmaster” logos at 12 o’clock feature a black outline, enhancing their three-dimensional effect. The chronograph sub-dials maintain the classic 3-6-9 layout. The central, eye-catching yellow chronograph seconds hand stands out. The sub-dials include a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, and a small seconds at 9 o’clock. This small seconds hand is a miniature Grade 5 titanium model of the NASA “Saturn V” launch vehicle—the rocket that successfully launched 11 times during the Apollo program, with a payload capacity to low Earth orbit of up to 140 tons, and remains the most powerful single-use rocket ever built.
