The Montblanc 1858 Automatic 24H was introduced at Watches & Wonders 2020, showcasing a unique single-hand 24-hour dial that allows wearers to read the entire day at a glance. Its bright red hand, combined with orientation markers on the outer ring, cleverly transforms the dial into a compass — an adventurous feature that highlights Montblanc’s spirit of exploration.
Dial Design & Compass Function
The black dial features a detailed Northern Hemisphere map, with 24 hour markers alternating between Arabic numerals and short indices. The “12” indicates noon, while “24” indicates midnight, and each hour is divided into four 15-minute segments. The compass function works by aligning the red hand toward the Sun in the Northern Hemisphere; the dial then indicates true north at “24” and true south at “12”. For the Southern Hemisphere, the indications are reversed.
Case, Materials & Vintage Design
The watch comes in a 42mm brushed stainless-steel case with a thickness of 11.2mm, paired with a bronze bezel that develops a unique patina over time. Arabic numerals and the Montblanc logo recall vintage 1930s Minerva timepieces. Luminous coating on the numerals, central hand, and map ensures readability in low-light conditions.
Movement & Technical Details
Inside, the MB 24.20 automatic movement operates at 28,800 vph and offers a 42-hour power reserve. The stainless-steel caseback is engraved with the “Spirit of Mountain Exploration” motif. Water-resistance is rated at 100 meters.
