Mikimoto introduced this pair of brooches in its 2022 “Wild and Wonderful” high jewelry collection, drawing inspiration from the world’s fifth continent, “Antarctica,” bringing the image of adorable “penguins” vividly to life. The designers created two distinct natural scenes for the penguins—leaping from an ice floe and swimming underwater—inviting exploration of the enchanting polar landscape.
The most distinctive feature of this collection is the use of “Baroque Pearls”—a type of irregularly shaped pearl more commonly found in non-bead cultured freshwater pearls. The designers cleverly utilized their natural contours to form variously shaped icebergs or the snowy white bellies of penguins, making the entire scene lifelike.
One brooch depicts three penguins lining up to dive into the sea:
The first spreads its wings mid-leap.
The second peeks out, looking around.
The third waits its turn on the ice.
The style is playful and highly pictorial. Beneath the icebergs crafted from baroque pearls, beryl and aquamarine form floating ice, while round diamond melee outlines the water’s surface. The most ingenious touch is three marquise-cut diamonds, transformed into a freely swimming school of fish, full of natural vitality.
The other brooch captures a penguin with wings spread, gliding swiftly through the water in a fluid and agile posture:
The penguin’s head and back are set with black spinels.
Its belly and wings are formed from a single, complete baroque pearl.
Its tucked feet are sculpted from white gold, vividly rendering the texture of the claws.
Behind the penguin, seemingly suspended diamond sparks, using round and kite cuts, evoke the water droplets churned up by its flapping flippers.
