The Bulgari L’Ammiraglio del Tempo is one of the most technically ambitious timepieces presented at Baselworld, showcasing an impressive upgrade from a triple-hammer, triple-gong to a quadruple-hammer, quadruple-gong minute repeater system. The result is a richer, more resonant, and louder chiming tone — a true symphony of fine watchmaking.
The case preserves the iconic oval shape originally designed by Daniel Roth, measuring 50 x 45mm with a 14.9mm thickness — substantial even by repeater standards. Fortunately, the ergonomic curve of the Daniel Roth case ensures it sits comfortably on the wrist despite its size.
This is Bulgari’s first minute repeater to incorporate a cylindrical balance spring and a constant-force escapement, ensuring consistent energy delivery for stable sound and precision. The large golden balance wheel dominates the semi-open dial, offering a mesmerizing view of the Geneva-striped movement plates and the intricate choreography of the hammers and gongs. Visually, it’s even more captivating than Bulgari’s 2012 tourbillon.
Available in 18K rose gold or white gold, the L’Ammiraglio del Tempo is powered by a hand-wound movement beating at 14,400 vph with a 48-hour power reserve. Only 20 pieces are produced in rose gold and 10 pieces in white gold, making it a rare collector’s treasure.
A quick historical note — Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta were once independent masters of high complications. After the Asian financial crisis, their brands were acquired by Bulgari, which explains the continued presence of both legends’ design DNA in Bulgari’s haute horlogerie collections. While Genta passed away in 2011, Daniel Roth later revived his own atelier under the name Jean Daniel Nicolas.
