The Métiers d’Art Chinese Zodiac series by Vacheron Constantin began with the “Year of the Snake” and has now launched its second piece, designed for the upcoming Year of the Horse (2014, Jiawu).
The case is available in two options: rose gold and platinum. Correspondingly, the rose gold version features a copper-colored enamel dial and a rose gold horse relief, while the platinum version is paired with a blue enamel dial and a platinum horse engraving. However, the Swiss engraver’s depiction of the horse resembles the mythological steed from Greek mythology, differing significantly in style from the traditional Chinese Zodiac representation of the horse.
The watch is powered by the Caliber 2460 G4 movement, which uses four separate discs to display the hours, minutes, day of the week, and date. The hour and minute discs are sliding, while the day and date advance in a jumping manner. The time display window is designed to maximize the visual impact of the gold engraving, with timekeeping taking a secondary role.
Through the sapphire crystal case back, one can admire the movement in action, as well as the 22K gold rotor with geometric embellishments. Every part has been finely finished and carries the Geneva Seal certification.
Both the rose gold and platinum versions are limited to 12 pieces each and can only be ordered through Vacheron Constantin boutiques. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking for a watch to wear during the Chinese New Year.
