The Dutch watch brand Gronefeld has consistently followed a path of retro yet distinctive designs, and this year at Baselworld, their Parallax 1912 Tourbillon has once again impressed everyone. It features a floating tourbillon with a hacking (stop-seconds) function, a mechanism typically found only in A. Lange & Söhne’s 1815 Tourbillon.
The dial is cut from a single piece of silver and features a matte finish, complemented by blued steel hands. At 2 o’clock, there’s the hour and minute subdial, at 11 o’clock is the power reserve display, and the central subdial is for the large seconds hand—design elements that are very characteristic of Gronefeld.
The large 60-second floating tourbillon is positioned at 7 o’clock on the dial.
Unlike the traditional pull-out crowns found in most watches, the crown of the Parallax 1912 Tourbillon functions through a “press-down” mechanism to switch between “winding/time-setting” modes. When the crown is pressed to enter the “time-setting (S)” mode, the tourbillon continues to run until the completion of the 60-second cycle, at which point it stops, allowing the user to set the time precisely. The Parallax 1912 Tourbillon is powered by the G-03 manual-winding movement, which offers a 70-hour power reserve—a remarkable achievement for a tourbillon watch.
The case has a diameter of 43mm, and it is available in either stainless steel or rose gold. The stainless steel version is limited to 12 pieces, with a retail price of $185,380; the rose gold version is limited to 28 pieces, with a retail price of $189,795.
