Part of Boucheron’s 2021 “Holographique” High Jewelry Collection, the Illusion cocktail rings celebrate the mesmerizing play of light inherent in opal, using the gem’s natural iridescence to evoke shifting, holographic reflections.
Renowned for its play-of-color, opal owes this optical phenomenon to the diffraction of light within its structure. The stone is composed of minute, orderly spheres of silica (SiO₂)—as light passes through these spheres, it scatters to produce a spectrum of rainbow hues that dance across the surface.

Boucheron selected three exceptional large opals as centerpieces:
-
A 50.95-carat white opal from Ethiopia, whose pure background accentuates a kaleidoscope of pastel tones.
-
A 10.38-carat black opal cut into a cabochon teardrop, displaying painterly strokes of vivid color.
-
A 30.98-carat black opal from Australia, radiating brilliant blue-green iridescence that evokes a sense of deep mystery.

To echo the opals’ magical spectrum, the designer crafted three dreamlike settings, each adorned with vibrant sapphires, diamonds, tourmalines, emeralds, garnets, and tsavorites surrounding the center stone. The trompe-l’œil (“illusion”) design allows the opal’s vivid hues to visually merge with the surrounding gemstones—creating the impression of a single, unified, shimmering jewel, alive with color and light.
