The Piaget Emperador Coussin XL 700P, unveiled as Piaget’s first pre-release piece for SIHH 2016, stands out for housing the brand’s first-ever hybrid “mechanical + electronic” movement, the Calibre 700P. The name “700P” pays tribute to Piaget’s pioneering Calibre 7P, the brand’s first ultra-thin quartz movement, launched in 1976.
The development of the Calibre 700P took two years, with the goal of pushing the precision of a mechanical watch to its limits—while remaining fully mechanical in energy source, requiring no battery installation or replacement. The movement retains a traditional rotor, mainspring barrel, and gear train, but replaces the balance wheel with a high-frequency 32,768 Hz quartz oscillator, dramatically enhancing accuracy and rendering the mechanism completely immune to magnetic interference.
The watch features a 46.5 mm cushion-shaped case crafted from 18K white gold, continuing the design language of Piaget’s high-end Emperador Coussin line. The openworked dial reveals the quartz oscillator at 1 o’clock, hour and minute hands at 3 o’clock, and a micro-rotor at 9 o’clock. Turning the watch over reveals the power reserve indicator, which displays a maximum power reserve of 42 hours when fully wound.
