This is Blancpain’s most exceptional artistic creation of the year, inspired by the iconic woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Japanese ukiyo-e master Katsushika Hokusai. The dial is crafted from Mexican silver obsidian, whose deep greenish-gray tones perfectly evoke the tumultuous motion of the sea.
The “Silver Obsidian” used by Blancpain originates from Mexico and is a semi-transparent volcanic glass speckled with fine silver inclusions, creating a shimmering surface that beautifully complements the hue of the waves. The Great Wave motif itself is sculpted from white gold, first mounted on a shakudō (a traditional Japanese alloy of copper and gold) base, then immersed in a rokushō bath—a copper-salt solution that creates a unique patina while partially corroding the base metal. Finally, the surface is polished by hand to reveal the distinctive luster and depth of the wave’s coloration.
Housed in a 42mm platinum case, the watch is powered by the Caliber 13R3A manual-winding movement, featuring three mainspring barrels that deliver an impressive 8-day power reserve.
This masterpiece is a unique piece — limited to 1 example worldwide.
