RICHARD MILLE RM 53-01 Tourbillon Overview
At SIHH 2018, RICHARD MILLE unveiled the RM 53-01, a collaboration with Argentine polo champion Pablo Mac Donough. Designed for extreme sports, this watch features an ultra-light and impact-resistant Carbon TPT case, double-layer sapphire crystal, and a suspended movement capable of withstanding intense shocks experienced in polo matches. This innovation makes it one of the most resilient luxury watches ever created.
Crystal and Case Engineering
The RM 53-01’s crystal, developed with sapphire manufacturer Stettler, consists of two sapphire layers with a PVC interlayer. Each sapphire is 1.1 mm thick, with a 0.2 mm PVC layer, totaling 2.4 mm. This construction ensures the inner movement remains intact even if the outer layer cracks, providing bulletproof-like protection. Anti-reflective and UV coatings enhance transparency. The barrel-shaped Carbon TPT case has a unique Damascus-like texture, making every watch distinctive.
Movement and Technical Features
The suspended movement is held by 0.27 mm steel cables, allowing it to absorb up to 5000 g of shocks. At 12 o’clock, a semi-skeletonized barrel shows the power reserve, while the tourbillon is at 6 o’clock. Frequency is 21,600 vph with a 70-hour power reserve. The movement is 6.35 mm thick, creating a three-dimensional mechanical effect. Blue luminescent hands and markers complement the open dial design.
