Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 Overview
The Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 was one of the most celebrated releases at Baselworld 2018. It stands out as a tribute to NASA’s Apollo 8 mission, the first journey in which astronauts left low-Earth orbit and viewed the far side of the moon. This model elevates the classic Speedmaster design with modern materials, laser-engraving innovation, and a dramatic skeletonized movement inspired by lunar exploration.

Laser-Engraved Lunar Surface Movement
To convey the theme of seeing the moon’s dark side for the first time, Omega chose the Caliber 1869 hand-wound movement and skeletonized its architecture. A high-precision laser engraves the craters and rugged texture of the lunar surface onto both sides of the movement plates. The engraved regions are then darkened, creating a matte rock-like effect that contrasts with the polished metal components. The result is a movement that visually mirrors the moon’s near side and far side, each offering its own landscape depending on which layer of the watch you observe.

Dial Layout and Chronograph Functions
The sub-dial layout includes a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. The central hand records chronograph seconds. All chronograph-related hands are finished in a bright yellow tone, matching the Speedmaster logo at 12 o’clock. This vivid color accent enhances legibility while visually referencing the mission-control instrumentation used during Apollo 8.

Compared to the original 2013 Dark Side of the Moon model, this Apollo 8 edition appears more balanced and visually open, thanks to the skeletonized structure and optimized proportions. Many Speedmaster collectors appreciate the absence of a date window, which keeps the design faithful to the traditional tool-watch simplicity of early Speedmaster chronographs.

Case Design and Wearability
The 44.25 mm case is crafted from black zirconia ceramic, a material known for its scratch resistance and smooth touch. Omega reduced the case thickness by 2.5 mm compared to earlier Dark Side of the Moon models, resulting in a final thickness of 13.8 mm. This makes the watch significantly more comfortable on the wrist without compromising the commanding presence that defines the Speedmaster line.
The polished ceramic chronograph pushers offer precise tactile feedback. Turning the watch over reveals an engraved quote from astronaut Jim Lovell: “WE’LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE,” a message transmitted before Apollo 8 orbited behind the moon and temporarily lost communication with Earth.
Although the black racing-style strap pairs well with the ceramic case, some may find it visually bold. Omega straps are interchangeable, allowing collectors to select leather, fabric, or rubber straps to better match personal style.
