The Lang & Heyne Anton Flying Tourbillon is one of the most distinctive creations in modern German independent watchmaking. Introduced at Baselworld 2018, it marked the brand’s first tourbillon wristwatch and was named after Anthony of Saxony, a 19th-century ruler of the Kingdom of Saxony. The rectangular case architecture, paired with a rectangular in-house movement, reflects the brand’s dedication to classical Saxon craftsmanship and historical authenticity.
The case measures 40 mm by 32 mm and is crafted in platinum or rose gold. Each corner is shaped with an inward-curved bevel, adding a subtle medieval character to the silhouette. This detail complements the white enamel dial, which embodies early 20th-century elegance with a railway-style minute track and Art Deco-inspired Arabic numerals. The central hour and minute hands are cut from solid gold and flame-blued by hand, a signature element of Lang & Heyne’s artisanal finishing.
Dial Design and Flying Tourbillon
The highlight of the watch is the beautifully executed flying tourbillon positioned at 6 o’clock. Its cage measures 11.1 mm in diameter, extending slightly into the minute track, creating visual depth and enhancing the symmetry of the rectangular dial layout. A small seconds hand is mounted on the tourbillon cage, reinforcing its mechanical presence.
The flying tourbillon’s design follows the tradition established by Alfred Helwig, the famed German watchmaker credited with inventing the flying tourbillon in Glashütte in 1920. By removing the upper bridge, the mechanism appears to float freely, giving the Anton a uniquely architectural, open visual signature.
Caliber IX Manual-Winding Movement
Inside the Lang & Heyne Anton Flying Tourbillon is the in-house Caliber IX, a rectangular manual-winding movement running at 18,000 vph with a 55-hour power reserve. Viewed through the sapphire case back, the movement showcases a four-bridge layout with frosted German silver plates. Two of the movement screws are each set with a brilliant-cut diamond, a decorative flourish that reflects the brand’s bespoke approach to movement decoration.
The combination of hand-applied frosting, polished bevels, blued screws, and artisanal engraving reflects the Saxon school of watchmaking and aligns the Anton with high-end independent horology.
Wearing Experience and Price
The watch is paired with a brown or dark blue alligator leather strap lined with sharkskin, offering both comfort and durability. Despite its rectangular form, the Anton Flying Tourbillon wears elegantly thanks to its curved lugs and balanced dimensions.
The official retail price is 86,100 euros for the rose gold version and 98,700 euros for the platinum edition, positioning the watch among the most refined artisanal tourbillon timepieces available from an independent manufacturer.
